Imposter Syndrome: What It Is and How to Overcome It

Imposter syndrome is becoming a phenomenon that causes a person to feel as though their personal victories are undeserved or not worthy of attention.  It can cause these individuals to feel out of place, unwanted, or undeserving when they are at work.  As experts in anxiety counseling for women in Windermere, we work with many people so they can learn that their accomplishments are products of their hard work and dedication.  These are a few things that you should understand about imposter syndrome and how you can overcome this disorder.

Feeling Guilty When You Accomplish Your Goals

No matter how hard or how tirelessly you have worked to accomplish your goals, you may still feel as though you do not deserve them.  Imposter syndrome can make you feel unworthy of the accomplishments that you have achieved in your life, simply because of the anxiety surrounding the disorder.

Anxiety of Feeling Undeserving

Imposter syndrome may cause you to feel anxiety about promotions, accomplishments, victories, and other great things that you have worked for in your life.  It may make you question your qualifications, hard work, education, and skills.  One of the reasons that people believe imposter syndrome affects certain people more than others is because they have heard messages of being unworthy in their past, which has also caused them to work even harder to get where they are.

Feeling Unworthy of Love

Some people suffer from imposter syndrome in their relationships, and this leads them to feel unworthy of love.  This is true even if their spouse repeatedly tells them how much they are loved.  Despite what they hear, these individuals will still feel unworthy of being loved and appreciated.  Over time, this can lead to a decreased sense of self, and it can even cause relationship issues to develop from the insecurities.  It may be beneficial to consider couples therapy to work through the issues together.

Ashamed or Undeserving Because of Your Identity

Many people assume that because of their identity, they are already undeserving of certain opportunities.  This does not consider their hard work, dedication, education, skills, or training.  Although this issue can cause people to suffer from imposter syndrome, it can also be damaging to their entire psyche and sense of self.  This is especially true when it comes to women and minorities in the workplace.  No matter your age, race, or gender, you have to learn that you have earned the right to be where you are today.
