How to become your authentic self?

How to become your authentic self?

In the course of your life, there will be times that you will struggle with your identity. This may mean that you question choices you make, directions that you take your career, your personal life, or your activities in, and whether you are staying true to your values. It might also mean that you question what sides of yourself people get to see versus who you feel that you are on the inside. In Orlando anxiety therapy teaching clients how to deal with anxiety sometimes means diving into these personal questions.  Anxiety therapists quite often also work as life coaches when they help clients find the best ways to present their authentic self to the world.

When Orlando anxiety counselors or life coaches talk about “authentic self” they are talking about the most real version of you. This is the version that most aligns with your values, morals, and personal belief system, and how you interact with the world. Do you know which version of yourself you present to the world? Do you know what your authentic self feels like and are you being true to that self or presenting a false self to the world?

What is the False Self?

The false self is not the version of you who is not authentically you. The false self is the version of you who puts on a façade to the world. Very often people use a façade or “false” self to put a barrier between themselves and others. This false self represents a version of you that may wish to elicit a certain type of response from those around them. This self is a version that is difficult to maintain because it tries to mold itself to the environment that it is in. Many people who are seeking counseling for anxiety in Orlando and begin work with an anxiety therapist, that they use their false self far more than they think.

What is the real self?

The authentic self is being when you are your “real” self. This is the version of you that is most you and doesn’t feel a façade is necessary for anyone. It is the version of you that is confident and is not afraid to allow others to see. This version wants to surround you with people who value your real and authentic you. This version of yourself brings your internal world outside.  Surrounding yourself with people who allow you to showcase this authentic version of yourself will bring you more in alignment.  You will begin to notice people are attracted to this version of you and your façade will no longer serve a purpose.

How can you tell the difference?

Why is it important to know the difference between your false self and your real self? Because reaching a sensation of true undeniable happiness within your being is important. This cannot be achieved with any consistency when you are allowing false versions of yourself to run your life. Your false self doesn’t believe that you are enough and wants to please the desires of others more than you. It is rooted in a belief that if you show who you really are, you will not be accepted, loved, promoted, valued, etc.  Allowing your false self to rule your world can cause you to become engulfed in a false reality where you become unaware of your clear identity.

Unmasking the False Self

In anxiety therapy, unmasking the false self is the first thing to do because the false self can happen without you even recognizing it. If you are unsure if you are living as your false self, try to think of it in this way:

  • Do you do things when perhaps you may not want to?
  • Are you focusing on pleasing and making sure other's needs are met before your own?
  • Do you know where you belong and have a clear idea of who you are as well?

While there are more questions to think about these are just a few starters. If you think you are living as your false self, it can be changed-you are not doomed! The way you go about this is by giving yourself more time to focus on yourself, your beliefs and values, and appreciating your greatness. That is how the false self can change into the authentic self! Contact an anxiety therapist in Orlando and begin anxiety counseling or life coaching.
