Grieving Before Goodbye: When Anticipatory Grief Makes Dating Harder

Many people feel scared to let their guard down and to fully allow themselves to be happy or secure in positive experiences. Somewhere along the way they learned that they could not survive a bad ending, so they brace for one constantly, even inside a relationship that is going well. That bracing has a name, anticipatory grief, and it quietly makes dating harder than it needs to be. Helping people loosen that grip is a steady part of the anxiety counseling we do at Orlando Thrive Therapy.

If you recognize yourself in that, you do not have to sort it out alone. reach out to our team at (407) 592-8997 and we will help you understand what is happening.

What is anticipatory grief, and how does it show up in dating?

It is grieving a loss before it has actually happened. Your mind builds a worst case version of the breakup and starts mourning it while you are still happily invested, as though preparing for the pain might somehow soften it. In dating, that tends to look like pulling back right when things get good, scanning for small signs that something is wrong, or feeling a wave of sadness in the middle of an otherwise good week. You can feel genuinely secure and quietly braced for disaster at the same time. The difficult part is that the bracing does not protect you from loss. It mostly keeps you from being present for the relationship in front of you, and over time it can push away the very person you were trying to hold onto.

Why would someone pull away from a relationship that is going well?

Usually because an old fear is making the decisions instead of the person. We once worked with a couple who had been together five years, well matched and genuinely happy, with a long history that had turned into an engagement. They came to us because, right after accepting the proposal, the woman decided she wanted to move out of state to chase a dream, which caught her partner completely off guard. In individual sessions she talked about her parents divorcing unexpectedly and how that had quietly convinced her that long term love does not last, even though she felt valued and secure with him. Leaving became a way to test the relationship, and in a sense to prove it would fail if she pushed hard enough. Her partner could not relocate because of work and close family. She signed a lease and left fairly abruptly, and over time he realized the life he wanted did not match what was happening, so he stepped away. That kind of pattern is exactly what ongoing relationship counseling is meant to interrupt before it makes the decision for you.

How do you stay open to love while carrying that fear?

You practice noticing the fear without letting it run the show. The work starts with identifying where the fear of abandonment or loss actually comes from, and how it turns into self protection, self sabotage, or quietly pulling away. From there, approaches like client-centered therapy and inner child work help you build genuine self awareness and a steadier sense of your own worth. That part matters, because people who know their own strengths do not feel the same pull to stay on guard against every possible what if. The goal is not to stop caring how things turn out. It is to trust that you would be okay either way, and that quiet confidence is usually what finally lets someone relax into a good relationship instead of guarding against it.

When should you reach out for anxiety counseling in Windermere?

When the fear is steering your relationships and talking yourself out of it has stopped working. If you keep pulling away from people who treat you well, or the dread sits with you even during calm, happy stretches, that is a reasonable time to get support rather than wait it out. For clients in Windermere and around Orlando, anxiety counseling offers a calm place to understand the pattern and slowly loosen it. You do not need to be in crisis to begin. You only need to be tired of grieving things that have not happened.

If you are ready to stop bracing and start being present, we are here. Call Orlando Thrive Therapy at (407) 592-8997 or schedule time with a therapist, and we will meet you where you are.
