Therapy Terms Explained

What is a Therapy Modality?

A modality is the specific therapeutic method, framework, or "blueprint" a therapist uses to treat a client. It is the underlying psychological theory put into practice. If therapy is a road trip to a healthier destination, the modality is the specific type of vehicle the therapist drives to get you there.

To help clarify our offerings, it helps to separate therapy services into three distinct buckets:

2. The Focus Area

(What is treated)

3. The Modality

(How it is treated)

  • EMDR
  • CBT
  • Gottman Method
  • ACT

How They Fit Together

Example 1

A therapist might conduct Couples Therapy (Format) to address Infidelity (Focus Area) using the Gottman Method (Modality).

Example 2

Alternatively, they might conduct Individual Therapy (Format) for Grief (Focus Area) using EMDR (Modality).

The Power of Individualized Care

Understanding how these three elements—Format, Focus Area, and Modality—fit together is crucial for realizing why individualized care is so effective. At Orlando Thrive Therapy, we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to mental health. Every client walks through our doors with a unique background, specific challenges, and distinct goals.

Aligning Your Therapy Elements

By carefully aligning the right format (who is participating) with the precise focus area (the specific issue at hand) and applying an evidence-based modality (the therapeutic tool), we create a highly personalized roadmap for your healing journey.

A Roadmap for Success

This customized combination ensures that you aren't just receiving generic advice, but rather a targeted, deeply intentional treatment plan designed specifically for your optimal growth, resilience, and long-term success.

Note: CPTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a diagnosis or condition, rather than a modality. The modalities used to treat CPTSD would be targeted interventions like EMDR, CBT, or EFT.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, extensively researched therapy modality primarily designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses directly on the brain’s ability to process and heal from disturbing life experiences. During a session, your therapist will guide you to focus on specific, troubling memories while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, taps, or sounds. This process helps "unstick" traumatic memories that are trapped in the brain's emotional center, allowing your mind to reprocess them safely. Over time, the intense emotional and physical responses tied to these memories lose their power. EMDR is particularly beneficial for treating PTSD, severe anxiety, and deep-rooted phobias, empowering you to move forward without being anchored to your past.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely used and evidence-based therapeutic modalities available today. It operates on the core principle that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are deeply interconnected. When we experience negative or distorted thought patterns, they directly influence our emotions and actions, often creating a cycle of distress. In CBT, your therapist works collaboratively with you to identify, challenge, and reframe these unhelpful cognitive distortions. Rather than dwelling endlessly on the past, CBT is highly structured, goal-oriented, and focused on the present. You will learn practical, hands-on coping strategies to manage stress, reduce anxiety, and combat depressive symptoms. By intentionally changing the way you interpret and react to challenging situations, CBT empowers you to break free from destructive cycles and build a more balanced, positive mindset.

Gottman Method

Couples & Relationship Therapy

The Gottman Method is a premier, research-based approach to couples therapy developed from over four decades of intensive study on what makes relationships succeed or fail. Designed to help couples navigate conflict and rebuild deep emotional connections, this modality focuses on strengthening the "Sound Relationship House." Your therapist will guide you and your partner through highly structured interventions aimed at improving verbal communication, increasing intimacy, and fostering mutual respect. A major focus of the Gottman Method is teaching couples how to manage solvable problems while finding constructive ways to navigate perpetual, unresolvable gridlock issues without resentment. By learning how to recognize and avoid the "Four Horsemen"—criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling—partners can successfully rebuild trust, cultivate profound empathy, and create a resilient, loving partnership that stands the test of time.

ACT

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique and powerful modality that encourages you to embrace your thoughts and feelings rather than constantly fighting or trying to suppress them. Rooted in mindfulness, ACT teaches you how to stop avoiding emotional pain and instead observe it with a sense of compassionate detachment. The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate difficult emotions, but to change your relationship with them so they no longer dictate your choices. Alongside acceptance, ACT focuses heavily on identifying your core personal values. Once you have a clear understanding of what truly matters to you, your therapist helps you commit to taking actionable, meaningful steps aligned with those values. By developing psychological flexibility, ACT allows you to live a rich, authentic, and purposeful life, even when faced with unavoidable hardships.

Our Insurance Policy

We operate as a self-pay practice to protect your confidentiality and ensure your treatment is dictated by your unique needs, rather than a specific mental health diagnosis or an insurance company's requirements. While we do not work directly with insurance, we are happy to provide superbills that you can easily submit to most major insurance carriers for out-of-network reimbursement.
