5 Grounding Exercises to Treat Your Anxiety

When anxiety spikes, your mind races into the future and your body follows. Grounding pulls you back to right now by giving your senses something real to hold onto. These five exercises are simple, free, and work almost anywhere. Keep a couple in your back pocket for the next time your thoughts start to spiral.
1. Pick up your pen
Getting the swirl out of your head and onto paper shrinks it. Set a timer for five minutes and write whatever is there, no editing and no fixing. You are not trying to solve anything, just to empty the noise. Most people notice the knot in their chest loosen by the end of the page.
2. Slow your breathing
Your breath is the fastest way to tell your body it is safe. Try box breathing: in for four counts, hold for four, out for four, hold for four, and repeat for a minute or two. The long, steady exhale is the part that calms your nervous system, so do not rush it.
3. Use the power of water
Cold water is a quick reset. Splash it on your face, hold your wrists under the tap, or press a cold glass to your cheeks. The cold nudges your body out of fight or flight and back toward calm. In a real spike, cold on the face can work within seconds.
4. Recite an affirmation
When your brain insists everything is falling apart, a short, believable phrase interrupts the spiral. Skip the over the top positivity and pick something true: I am safe right now, this feeling will pass, I have gotten through this before. Say it slowly, a few times, like you mean it.
5. Get outside
Stepping outdoors engages every sense at once, the light, the air, the sound, the ground under your feet. A few minutes of a slow walk, ideally somewhere green, lowers stress hormones and breaks the loop. No agenda and no phone, just notice what is around you.
When grounding is not enough
Grounding is a great tool for the moment, but it is not a cure. If anxiety is showing up most days and getting in the way of work, sleep, or your relationships, that is a sign to get real support. Our anxiety therapy in Orlando helps you get underneath the anxiety instead of only riding out the spikes, and when it is rooted in something you lived through, EMDR therapy can take the charge out of the memories driving it.
